Pherum Staff Replacement Rules
In fantasy staves are often a staple of magic users, known to be a device to focus and empower a casters ability. With this variant staves take on the role of empowering inherent magical abilities as opposed to granting new spells by way of a charged device, And allow casters to customize their own staff for their casting needs. This ruleset removes and replaces the staff list and how Staves function in Pathfinder

Physical Description
A typical staff is made of Wood, measures anywhere from 4 feet to 7 feet long and is 2 inches to 3 inches thick, weighing about 6 pounds. A staff is inscribed with Runes, which give the staff power. Runic Inscriptions, ranging from a +1 to +5 will cover the staffs surface, a total value of all these inscriptions is the Runic Level of the Staff, which indicates the staff's power. To determine a staffs abilities from it's runes is a DC 20 Knowledge (Arcana) check A typical staff also functions as a walking stick, quarterstaff, or cudgel. A staff  has AC 7, 10 hit points +5/Rune Level, hardness 5 +1/Rune Level, and a break DC of 24.

Activation
Staves use the spell trigger activation method, so it takes the full casting time to cast the spell from a staff. To activate a staff, a character must hold it forth in at least one hand (or whatever passes for a hand, for non-humanoid creatures), and must be attuned to the staff. Attuning to a Staff takes 24 hours of wielding the staff. After you are attuned you maintain that attunement until you attune to another staff, or someone else attunes to your staff. You can only be attuned to one staff at a time

Starting Staff
There are 3 Base staff choices to buy initially; a staff of Light, Darkness, and Swiftness. Each Cost 100gp to purchase, but gain different abilities as the rune level of your staff increases. See below for a full list of the abilities for each of the 3 staffs

Material Options

Staves are often made from common woods, such as Oak or Maple. Using other materials can effect the staffs properties. The following are alternative materials for Staves:

Runic Inscriptions

Staves are modified with Runic Inscriptions to gain magical abilities. A single Staff cannot have a Runic Level (total of all inscriptions) greater then 10. Staves cannot have the same ability more than once unless otherwise noted.

To calculate the cost of adding an Inscription to a Staff, using the chart to the left, determine the new rune level modifier of the staff, and look at the base price for that level below, and subtract from that amount the base cost for buying a staff at your current rune level (Example: you have a +2 Staff and want to add a +3 Inscription, the new level will be 5,

Base Cost of 5 - Base Cost of 2 = 50'000 - 8'000 =  42'000gp to add the +3 inscription)
